BVCHD CORONAVIUS (COVID-19) UPDATE
We understand that members of our community are concerned about the risk of exposure to the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19). As of today (3/14/2020), there have been no confirmed cases of coronavirus in San Bernardino County, and Bear Valley Community Hospital has not treated any patients with a confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19). BVCHD is monitoring the coronavirus outbreak and is working closely with local and state health agencies, other regional hospitals, and the Centers for Disease Control to monitor and implement the most current guidelines.
The safety of our patients, visitors, employees, and physicians remains our highest priority. BVCHD has prepared a plan for the screening, isolation, and initial care of patients who seek treatment for the coronavirus or other infectious diseases. At this time all testing for the presence of the coronavirus must be done in coordination with the public health department.
The Hospital and Skilled Nursing facility will be screening all visitors for recent travel and signs and symptoms of illness. When visiting the hospital, you will be asked to wash your hands before entering the facility. Visitors to the hospital and in our outpatient clinics will be limited to 1 person per patient and we are asking that children under the age of 16 do not visit the hospital unless they are seeking medical care.
Patients who are concerned that they have symptoms of the coronavirus should contact their primary care provider by telephone to discuss their symptoms. Most people infected with the novel coronavirus have mild cold symptoms. A small fraction of people, however, may require more intensive care. We understand your concern about protecting yourself from respiratory diseases. Patients who are experiencing symptoms of the coronavirus and experiencing increased shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing should come to the Emergency Department. If time allows, please notify the hospital ahead of time so that we can prepare for your arrival.
Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent the novel coronavirus infection. The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The hospital is recommending the following precautions to prevent the transmission of coronavirus: stay at home if your are experiencing mild symptoms, avoid close contact with people who are sick, cover your cough with a tissue and throw the tissue in the trash, avoid touching your face, disinfect surfaces frequently touched and wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Further information regarding the coronavirus is available on the several websites such as BVCHD, CDC, and the California Department of Public Health Webpage. BVCHD will continue to update our website and social media pages as new information or guidelines become available.
