Internal Medicine

Internal Medicine at Bear Valley Community Healthcare District

Doctors of internal medicine are similar to primary care doctors in that they work to establish long-term relationships with their patients. Both internists and PCPs can help with disease management and prevention; both can help coordinate care among specialties; and both can help patients manage chronic health concerns. Unlike primary care doctors, however, doctors of internal medicine only serve adult patients. And, because they are specially trained in the ways that internal organs and body systems function together, they are often better equipped to serve those with complex medical issues.

Fortunately, at BVCHD, we have a full team of physicians who focus both on family medicine (all ages) and internal medicine (adults only), so you can choose the provider that is right for you.

When Should I See an Internist Vs. a Primary Care Physician?

If you’re looking to form a long-term relationship for your everyday healthcare needs, a PCP will be your first choice. Your PCP is able to help with physicals, routine check-ups, common illnesses and prescriptions, and they can help with preventative medicine to keep your body healthy.

If you’re managing more complex chronic health concerns, you might prefer a doctor of internal medicine, also known as an Internist. Internists complete a three-year residency focused on things like critical care and hospital medicine. Internists may not handle some of the simple procedures your family doctor would but they’ll be better equipped to handle issues associated with specific diseases and treatment options.

If you’re an adult, you may even choose an Internist to serve as your PCP, especially if you deal with chronic issues like hypertension, heart disease, COPD or diabetes.

What Kinds of Issues do Internists Treat?

Internists help treat and manage a wide range of long-term illnesses and conditions that impact internal organs and systems, such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Autoimmune issues
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Kidney disease
  • COPD
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Asthma
  • Osteoporosis

Doctors of internal medicine are especially good at helping diagnose conditions and making connections between symptoms that other doctors may miss. Many are board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in areas such as cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, rheumatology and other conditions.
